Dil's Cemetery Story and Pictures by Angie Hatfield These photographs were taken at Dils cemetery in Pikeville, Ky. This historic cemetery was named for Col. John Dils, a Civil war veteran and prominent Pike Countian.
Slaves owned by the Dils family and their decendants are buried here. This is one of the few integrated cemeteries to be found in the South from the last century and what you see in the background of the sign picture is, in fact, the African-American portion of the cemetery. The Dils cemetery also contains the grave of Randolph McCoy, patriarch of the McCoy family during the famous Hatfield-McCoy fueds. His wife Sarah and daughter Roseanna are also buried here. Roseanna was in love with a Hatfield, Joncy, and made a famous midnight ride on horseback to warn the Hatfields of an impending McCoy attack. I took these pictures under clear conditions with a digital camera. Click on pic for hi-res image Something was caught in this picture at the base of the sign. Below is a close up of whatever it is. These shots were taken with a digital camera. The object seems to be hovering above the base of the marker. It also appears to be casting a shadow on the concrete. |
